ISUSTAIN 2024: International Conference Advances Green Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Education

The Erasmus+ ECoGREEN Consortium, in collaboration with ISUSTAIN (Interdisciplinary Research Center for Circular Economy and Sustainability), Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR), successfully organized ISUSTAIN 2024 – International Interdisciplinary Conference on Green Entrepreneurship and Education for Sustainability on 2–3 December 2024 at the Arntz-Geise Learning Center, UNPAR, Bandung, Indonesia. The international conference served as a major dissemination milestone for the ECoGREEN Project, bringing together academics, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and sustainability advocates to discuss interdisciplinary approaches to education, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

ISUSTAIN 2024 was designed as a platform for knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation, focusing on societal challenges related to sustainability in higher education and green entrepreneurship. The conference explored a wide range of themes including Circular Economy, Green Entrepreneurship, Green Jobs, Education for Sustainability, Innovation and Design for Sustainability, Sustainable Behaviour, Engineering for Sustainability, Digital Innovation, Social Enterprise, Sustainable Business, Waste Management, Sustainable Supply Chain, Sustainability Leadership, and Data Science for Sustainability.

The two-day conference featured eight distinguished keynote speakers from academia, government, industry, and sustainability practice, representing both Indonesian and international institutions. Speakers included representatives from the Ministry of National Development Planning of Indonesia, Hasselt University (Belgium), Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands), Rekosistem, Institute of Sustainability and Agility, Parongpong RAW Lab, as well as sustainability researchers and ECoGREEN leadership. Their presentations offered diverse perspectives on green innovation, sustainable business models, policy direction, and the role of higher education in shaping a more sustainable future.

The academic component of ISUSTAIN 2024 demonstrated strong scholarly engagement, featuring 31 selected abstracts and 30 full papers, presented through three parallel sessions and a Thesis Sustainability Award session. These sessions provided a dynamic forum for researchers and practitioners to present interdisciplinary work, exchange ideas, and explore collaborative pathways for sustainability-oriented innovation and entrepreneurship.

Participation in the conference was significant, with over 200 attendees on the first day and continued strong engagement on the second day, reflecting broad interest in sustainability discourse across disciplines and institutions. The event also received very positive feedback from participants, who rated the content, speakers, materials, and facilities highly, highlighting the value of the conference sessions and the quality of discussions generated throughout the event.

Beyond academic sessions, ISUSTAIN 2024 also incorporated a cultural and social engagement program, including activities at Saung Angklung Udjo, where participants experienced Sundanese cultural heritage through music and interactive performances. This closing activity strengthened intercultural exchange among participants while reinforcing sustainability’s social and community dimensions.

As one of ECoGREEN’s most significant dissemination and knowledge-sharing events in Year 2, ISUSTAIN 2024 strengthened international collaboration, expanded interdisciplinary dialogue, and reinforced the project’s mission to integrate sustainability and green entrepreneurship into higher education ecosystems and societal innovation.
