Train-the-Trainer Program Strengthens Educators’ Capacity in Sustainability Reporting

As part of its commitment to embedding sustainability into higher education systems, the Erasmus+ ECoGREEN Consortium successfully organized a two-day Train-the-Trainer Program on Sustainability Reporting on 14–15 January 2025 in Bandung, Indonesia. Coordinated by Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR) under Work Package 5, the training focused on building educators’ competency in sustainability reporting using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards 2021, equipping lecturers with the knowledge and tools needed to integrate sustainability reporting into teaching, curriculum development, and research.

The capacity-building program brought together lecturers representing all Indonesian university partners in the ECoGREEN consortium, including UNPAR, UNWAHAS, USAKTI, SCU, UBAYA, and UAJ, creating an interdisciplinary learning environment where educators could deepen their understanding of sustainability disclosure frameworks and their practical implementation. A total of 13 participants attended the first day, with 14 participants joining on the second day, reflecting strong institutional engagement and commitment to advancing sustainability literacy within higher education.

Delivered by sustainability reporting specialists from Karisman Consulting, an official GRI training partner, the workshop combined lectures, case studies, group discussions, and practical exercises to provide both conceptual foundations and applied knowledge. Participants explored key topics including GRI Standards 2021, stakeholder engagement, materiality assessment, human rights reporting, integration of SDGs into sustainability reporting, and preparation for the GRI Sustainability Professional Certification Exam. The sessions emphasized how sustainability reporting can serve not only as a compliance framework, but also as a strategic tool for institutional transparency, stakeholder accountability, and sustainability transformation.

A key strength of the training was its applied learning approach. Participants worked through real-world reporting case studies, practiced stakeholder mapping and materiality analysis, and explored methods for linking sustainability impacts with internationally recognized disclosure standards. This practical orientation aimed to prepare lecturers not only to understand sustainability reporting frameworks, but also to develop future learning modules, teaching materials, and research methodologies based on sustainability reporting data—a long-term capability target of the ECoGREEN project.

Participant feedback highlighted the positive impact of the training. Evaluation results showed that 72.7% of respondents gave the training content the highest score, reflecting strong appreciation for the relevance and quality of the sessions. Participants also valued the speakers’ expertise, the practical materials provided, and the opportunity for collaborative learning across partner institutions, while constructive feedback suggested expanding hands-on exercises and additional case-based preparation for certification pathways.

By strengthening educators’ expertise in sustainability reporting, the Train-the-Trainer Program marked an important milestone in ECoGREEN’s mission to build institutional capacity, enhance sustainability education, and create long-term academic ecosystems capable of advancing transparent, responsible, and impact-driven sustainability practices across higher education institutions in Indonesia.
